Morning everyone and welcome to a new week! Last week's Weekly Chat ended with some interesting entries and very interesting links (wonderful pix of swan giving cygnets a ride, courtesy of Lindybird, and, thanks very much Alan; another perspective on those oil-covered pelicans - good news too!). OG: Not rushing and dashing; kids are here and headed to bed early for ultra-early departure. Margobird: Thanks for update on Hope and Lily.
Gather USA/England draw was result of bungle by England goalkeeper?
The second Derby peregrine fledged yesterday afternoon. There is a great video on the blog of the moment it finally plucked up the courage to go:

Lindybird what a picture and yes way of the Cuteness Scale.
Margobird
MARGOBIRD somehow missed out that you have had problems and had stitches (and here is me whittering on about Dillon) hope things are on the mend with you now.
On dolls houses, The most impressive one in the world must be Queen Mary's Dolls House at Windsor. If you haven't seen it please (no matter what age or sex) try to see it. Absolutely fascinating, think I have see it 3 or 4 times and would go again.
Don't remember a boat in my bath (must have had a deprived childhood) but did have one on a string to take to boating ponds. Anyhow I was terrified to let it go as I thought it would sink and never get to the other side. the thing of nighmares
DIANE/ANNETTE is there a petition I can sign or was this a US only thing.. Slaughter of Whales for scientific reasons, as if anyone really believes that, disgusting
BRENDA sorry to hear you have been in the wars as well.
LINDYBIRD Your solar lights sound nice (picture please) wasn't that a wonderful photo of the owl and the pussycat, but perhaps the owl better not try it again .
What a day for the LG live camera to go down, after such an exciting day up to then! Had a man look at the kitchen this morning with a view to new doors, worktops and sink. Don’t want a new layout designed and there is nothing wrong with the old cupboard carcasses, so this seems the best way to do it, and with least disruption! Can also have matching doors to replace horrible old louvres on the laundry cupboard (a closed alcove for washer and dryer and airing racks). OH mowed all the grass, front and back this afternoon, while I had a mostly indoor day, catching up on correspondence etc, but did do my part of watering garden tonight. We had our own freshly pulled carrots for dinner tonight!!! They were from a short row I started in the cold frame and were d e l i c i o u s . There are enough for one more meal, then we have to wait for later ones, but our courgettes could well be ready next week.
Will be thinking of everyone - and dogs - having check-ups, consultations, stiches out etc tomorrow.
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Thanks Sandy for the news of the 2nd peregrine fledgin at Derby. Great video.
Really enjoyed the footie today. Especially Argentina and also Mexico who beat the cheating French 2- 0.
Evening all: Seems like the cam has been down a while. Let's hope for an early fix tomorrow. Glad yesterday's lunch crowd enjoyed food and chat with friends. I'm driving to Long Beach, just south of LA, Saturday for a late breakfast with a dear friend who now lives in Kansas City. She's out here visiting her daughter and two grandchildren. Typically we meet in Malibu but I don't want to eat at that noisy place again and she doesn't have her own car, so I'm doing the drive but working in some other LA errands.
Lindybird: Hope you slept well Thursday night. We're thinking - well I am - of getting a little fountain in the garden; something the birds can splosh about in without having to worry about the cat. Also some solar lights. Very cute little owl - there's obviously a benefit in being so tiny in certain circumstances.
OG: Kitchen plan sounds good - very interesting because we also had ghastly louvred doors on our laundry area; all gone, now area is open but pushed farther down the kitchen and we added granite over machines to match new kitchen countertops. I'm going to have a raised veggie bed in our reorganized garden.
BrendaH: Isn't it awful that just a simple slip on the stairs can create such inconvenience, not to mention discomfort. Bet you'd get antsy after a couple of days off your feet - that sort of thing always sounds so much better in theory than practice.
HeatherB: What was the theory behind filling submarines with baking powder/bicarb? I never had those (also failed physics!)
Margobird: I know what you mean about shorts - I don't like to scare young people by going out in public in them anymore.
Sandy RP: Fab video of the Derby peregrine - the urge to fly must be overwhelming, but you can see how they hesitate. Wonder if their little hearts are going pitty-pat while they get up the nerve. It was nice to see him/her gliding away across the road.
dibnlib: That whale petition was from Greenpeace. I Googled Greenpeace and got the following (very long)link to the petition: It has a list of countries in the drop-down menu that includes the UK, so I'm sure you could sign it. https://secure3.convio.net/gpeace/site/Advocacy?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=624&s_src=ga&gclid=CLva5JjTqKICFQ1biAodFkSXSw
Hallo also to Alan and Djoan and thanks to all for posts! Off to see if the webcam has miraculously sprung to life again.....
The apples on my tree are edible now (actually two trees, one huge and one small, growing together). The most adorable fat little groundhog arrives every evening and munches apples until he's stuffed. We also have deer coming every morning at dawn to eat fruit.
Really tired tonight. Can't keep my eyes open. Will catch up with everyone soon. Everybody have a nice Friday!
Sleep tight Diane: I'm going to make it an early night too. Just watched the LA Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals - not typically a follower, but it was an excellent game tonight! Say Hi to your little groundhog and those pretty deer next time you see them!
