Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 8 May 2016

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

Last week's Chat thread is here.

Sorry folks, no cheery picture this week. Busy this evening with all sorts of minor crises. LOL

Everyone have a wonderful week!!!

  • Evening all: Fab day with the whales - see the link for a video Mike took of our cavorting friends. (Scroll down the page) www.graywhalescount.org/.../Counters.html

dibnlib: A successful day all round for you - here's to another one tomorrow.

Lindybird: Oh dear....and here we thought Bonnie was done with hole digging.  Will you replace the birdbath?  Thanks for the info on the pit - it's fascinating to hear about local businesses; makes me wonder about the times when it was busy, what happened to make it close down, and how that affected the local economy.  Gosh, just read that Pilkington's Glass is a multinational based in St. Helens, UK and a subsidiary of - surprise!  - a Japan-based company.  It was founded in 1826. (Thank you Wikipedia!)

OG: Sounds like a very satisfying time; hope the good gardening weather continues.

Rosy: Is that you or the neighbor who's at the hospital first thing in the morning?  Oh I love the sound of the Green Freak - three of my favorite ingredients right there.

Margo: Thinking of you and sending hugs.

    Have a good Tuesday everyone

  • Good Morning.  A little grey, and some drizzle here.

Thanks for the film clip, Annette - it won't work on my tablet so I'll look at it after breakfast on my desktop. I'm still struggling with hay fever but have had some relief by using a nasal spray which stops me streaming all day. I don't usually get it this early in the year, and in fact had not had it much at all since the menopause - there have to be some compensations for getting old! I think it's the Rapeseed which is about four fields away from us, but blowing this way.

Terrible pictures on TV of the enormous destruction in Canada of almost half a city, those poor people who have lost everything. Nice to hear that plenty of help was sent in the form of clothes, toys, etc. by other citizens.

  • Good Morning.  A wet night and morning here. Just a quick visit to catch up with your news. We are fine, but have been busy because of visitors, bowls and visiting sick friends. The days have flown by. Now I need to take OH to the hairdressers and then go shopping. I should be able to post later today.

  • ROSY   that Green Freak sounds sooo good

  • Good to hear that you're fine, just busy, Brenda.

The rain started properly here late morning. This was just after we had spent 20 mins clearing up:  Bonnie found some tulip bulbs in a pot, and brought three of them into the house, complete with soil.........my OH brushed up what he could, then got out the Hoover. I moved all the furniture in the dining room, as the dirt was just everywhere: thank goodness we put off buying a new carpet.  (Although at this rate, I don't know when or if we shall ever bother)

Edit:  I have spent all weekend picking up pieces of vegetation and dry sticks which she brings in, because the doors have been open in the fine weather.

  • Another lovely day and we had a pleasant 90 mins walking by the canal. Not much boat activity but "The Seagull" was on the go which is always nice to see. A cheery wave from the crew is always good. A bit of tidying in the garden, was much needed and OH oiled our wood carved owl and eagle. Chicken Veronique is a good bet for supper.

LINDY  I know what you mean. We tend to leave patio doors open in the good weather too.

  • Morning all: E-mail from sister confirms pouring rain in her area.  I should point out the whale breaching in the video is a calf, so not as impressive as the adult whale I saw breaching during my shift. Still, you can see the Mom and get an idea of her size.

Lindybird: Don't worry about replacing that carpet. We had ours cleaned only for puss to immediately wee on it. Just wait for Bonnie to get much older.

Off to brunch at friend's house today - we (group of four) typically meet for breakfast but have all been busy, preoccupied of late so are catching up today.  May Gray has settled in....

  • Anette: You are quite right!! Two large ones who fight and a smaller one, guess the female. Hedgehogs are called a gardeners best friend for a VERY good reason – they eat garden slugs as their main diet. Apparently they can eat up to a hundred in a night and they roam anywhere up to a mile so are very useful. As an aside, I have not seen a slug in our garden this spring at all.

Lindybird: I wholeheartedly sympathise with your hay fever problem. I suffer from a permanent sinus twist which leaves me vulnerable. Last year I, excuse the pun, breathed a sigh of relief as a farm very near us had appeared to change to cattle. This year rats, rape seed planted again and it is south west of us, our prevailing wind direction, so back on nasal spray. I have a prescribed tablet which is very effective but, and there is always a but, it reacts with one of my blood pressure tablets to cause eczema, which never goes away once appeared so cream all over me, a once daily all over application. Ho ha! such is life.

Roof finished yesterday afternoon and rain tested very seriously in the evening – no need for irrigation in the garden. Cement in gully did not set in time so wash down back door window and strip and clean cat-flap. Now waiting dinner to finish cooking.

  • Hello all, just caught up with your news.   Keith - thanks for the vid on the hedgehogs.

Lindybird - love those pics, its always amazing how nature reclaims land originally taken from her for man's needs.

OG - glad you managed to get some more gardening done and do hope those aches have disappeared now.

Glorious day on Sunday, more overcast with hazy sunshine yesterday and today - rain virtually all day but it was promised.

OH still having to go to the hospital for dressing changes - looks like a bit of infection may be there so will probably have to change the dressing for him whilst on holiday. Have to go with him on Thursday to see how its done!! Had my review re my anti-coagulants and everything fine, doc even said I had a perfect blood pressure reading.

Diane and Annette hope all is well with you both and Diane, that the minor crises have been resolved.

Yes, the fire in Canada is quite devastating but at least communities have come together to help those affected - wonderful human kindness shown.

  • Well boo hiss. I apparently did not - as I thought - copied and pasted my most recent post, which I just came back to edit - only to find it's not here. Now I can't even remember what I was going to add...  So, a very brief recap:

KeithG: I was wondering if hedgehogs could possibly survive or thrive in our area. In the meantime, possums keep some of our garden pests (alive or dead) cleaned up, not to mention snacking on the seed droppings under the bird feeders.  Will the cement in the gully have to be redone?

Lynette: Hope your OH's infection clears up quickly and doesn't create too much distraction on your holiday. When are you leaving?

    Have a good Wednesday all
