News from other nests 2013/2014

I have just had a look at Sanibel cam and I see an Osprey has arrived.   No idea who it is - is it Ripply from last year or a new bird.  I remember last year finding a facebook/blog page about this nest but for the life of me can't remember what it was so can't compare images from last season, so if anyone else can remember......

  • You are welcome Limpy but we don't seem to have helped very much :)

  • Underneath the 7 August post by Millcroft Vets FB there were some further comments written yesterday which which add to the story.

This must have been posted by LDOP

All at the Lake District Osprey Project are so pleased that our osprey chick Blue 9A is in such good hands. After having watched his progress on screen for the last 9 weeks we wish him well at his new home in Scotland. Thank you Vicki for your prompt attendance and expert handling at Paul's farm and for organising his best chance for the future.

    A question was asked:

Will he be able to go to Africa eventually or will he stay here now?

    and Vicki responded:

Millcroft Veterinary Group   JD  asks if he'll go back to Africa - yes, we're hoping so. It depends how quickly his wing improves - if he's strong enough to join the ospreys coming down from Scotland shortly then he will be released then but if he's still needing to strengthen it then he'll stay in the UK and be released when they return from Africa next year.   Lake District Osprey Project, when do the first birds start to return? No one has yet responded to Vicki Temple.

  • Thank you very much Sheila.  They don't have long to get him ready for this year!  Hope he continues to do well.

LDOP Project reported on August 7 - The vet has now examined 9A thoroughly and from this, although uninjured, it is apparent that he is not going to be flying anywhere much this season.

The feathers were of main concern as most of the secondary flight feathers showed deep stress marks running across them – areas of weakness and poor growth caused by the fluctuations of the infection. The vet felt that these feathers could easily snap if too much pressure was put on them.

Today August 10 they updated -

Good news – Blue 9A is now housed up in Scotland. The result of his endoscopy showed that he has no infection of the gut so his future looks bright.

He is now in a large aviary with water and will hopefully put on weight, learn to fish and eventually moult out his weak feathers.

I am specultaing that from this he is not going far this season.

CAPTIVITY - Unfortunately Ospreys in captivity do not do well and the last three ospreys I have followed in captivity over the past few years have not survived the winter despite being reported as doing well. They do stress easily as there is such an urge built into them to migrate that all sorts of problems occur relating to being captive.

On a plus note Vanessa Greene did successfully train a bird in captivity.

On the assumption it remains in captivity over winter and does not migrate and then survives one wonders if it could ever be released - would it learn to catch after relying on human feeding for a year or so. Could it migrate for the first time as a one year old. Lots of questions not tried before.

Again these are only speculative questions but interested in what others think of captive ospreys. However i do wish this bird all the best.

  • Forgot to add - Blue 9A is housed near Stirling at Alloa about 10 to 15 minutes away from me.

I hope to pop along this week and have a look as visitors are welcome.

  • Keith that would be great if they let you visit 9A! I really hope they can rehabilitate him quickly enough to release before migration window closes!

  • Keith could "Blue 9 A" not be put into a box and flown out by plane to Africa and then set free??
