News from other nests 2013/2014

I have just had a look at Sanibel cam and I see an Osprey has arrived.   No idea who it is - is it Ripply from last year or a new bird.  I remember last year finding a facebook/blog page about this nest but for the life of me can't remember what it was so can't compare images from last season, so if anyone else can remember......

  • She looks wonderful - thanks for the link, Starling!

Let's hope that things work out for 9A as well.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Have only just read about 9A How sad when he has fought so hard Hopes for a positive outcome

Nel looks great Much like she should at her age

  • I would be a bit more cautious about Nel; she is 8 weeks old now, so would normally be fledging, and does not noticeably have the pale tips to the feathers which you can see in Deri at Dyfi (who is only one day older than Nel). The weaknesses in the feathers, discussed in the Lake District's report about 9A, can occur through periods of starvation as well as illness, so this would be another concern.

Obviously O.W.L. are not going to let Nel try flying until she is equipped to do so, so we'll see how it develops.

  • Hey ChrisyB, I visited Bassenthwaite on Monday afternoon, but missed 9A's attempt to fly at 5pm by one hour, as I had to get on the road back to London. What a beautiful setting you have there, and loved the fantastic view of the whole valley and two lakes from the upper viewing point especially!  Fingers crossed for the rehabilitation process for 9A, it feels like slightly uncharted territory if they believe he will not be able to fly well enough to migrate this season, what could happen to him in the longer term.

  • Fingers crossed for Blue 9A(14).  Updates here.

  • Sheila would you mind telling me what it said, I don't have facebook and it's not a public page?

  • Starling   It is rather long, so I will copy and paste some of it.  It repeats much from the update from Bassenthwaite and continues

Hearing he was unwell, Adrian Jones from the Forestry Commission asked if a vet could go and examine him. Vicki Temple, our exotic animal specialist was called from her work at the Workington surgery to attend.Although 9A was bright and alert, it was quickly obvious to Vicki that his wings weren't as strong as they should have been and that his right wing in particular wasn't quite right. She made the decision to bring him in to the surgery so we could investigate the problem further and devise a plan. After he had been fed and settled in, Vicki and exotics nurse Nichola Rae anaesthetised him (although it may sound daunting, it's safer for many birds to be anaesthetised for examination and X-rays rather than them being stressed) for his X-rays. These showed that despite his illness, his bones were OK but his carpus (wrist joint - near the backwards R on the X-ray) was loose and wouldn't be strong enough to carry him on the long flight over to Africa at the moment.

A9 was anaethesised and blood samples were taken.  Vicki contacted Romain Pizzi (http://www.romainpizzi.com/index.htm) - the vet who looks after Edinburgh Zoo and Scottish SPCA's Wildlife rescue centre (I'm not sure whether the links will work, I copied and pasted that).  ScottishSPCA's Wildlife Centre are experienced in caring for all species of native wildlife but, more importantly, they are experienced in dealing with ospreys.

9A was taken to the centre in Clackmannanshire.

A second report said:  Romain did a quick endoscopy and although there is a little fluid in one of his airsacs, there was no infection elsewhere. He's hopeful that the wing injury is just a soft tissue problem (ie muscles or ligaments) and he is cautiously hopeful for 9A's release.

If I find any more I will post there here.

  • Sheila - Thank you so much for your post, I was expecting a small update!  My goodness, what a lot poor 9A is going through.  It all sounded quite positive though so I will keep my fingers crossed that all goes well.

Please do post any updates that you see.  I suppose I really should try Facebook, but I have always resisted the urge LOL.

    Thanks again.
