I have just had a look at Sanibel cam and I see an Osprey has arrived. No idea who it is - is it Ripply from last year or a new bird. I remember last year finding a facebook/blog page about this nest but for the life of me can't remember what it was so can't compare images from last season, so if anyone else can remember......
Worries about E3 in the Southwest Florida Bald Eagle nest. This chick has not eaten in a few days as far as I know.

Wow Keith, that is some trip you have organised for May!

E3 the bigger chick in the Souhwest Florida eagle nest has died. Now there is a turnup for the books. Only two weekends ago everyone was worried for her younger sibling E4 as they were on the point of dying. Now it looks as if it E4 that is going to be the young eagle to survive.
What a strange state of affairs Tiger. We would never have predicted that.

I've not followed that nest. Is there a reason for the death? Poor parenting, lack of food, bad weather? Sad.

I do not think anyone knows. It just seem to stop eating and gradually got weaker.
This was the nest that steak was supplied to the nest two weekends ago.
Hmm expensive tastes, or perhaps not, and that is why it died! Around 26 years ago a lanner/saker falcon, with an aerial, was seen sitting on our garage and house roofs for a day. I felt so sorry for it, I cut off a thick slice from our uncooked roast beef and took it outside. The bird swooped down straight away and I backed off hastily I can say! It turned out to be a bird from a safari park, out on its first flight when it was spooked and off it went. I think it was Windsor way, but can't remember now.
That was a nice thing to do, Sheila. Do you know if they ever got the bird back?
Our herring gulls are red listed birds. Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.
Oh yes. I had just started at my job in Cambridge and luckily there was an experienced birder there. With great difficulty OH and I found out who to notify to establish that we had found the bird, then came the task of trying to read the ring!!! This finally done and the safari park notified, the work colleague took the bird away to hold on to it until the owners came to retrieve it. Despite my foregoing a large piece of our beef dinner, and having done all the donkey work generally, it was the person actually holding the bird who received the accolade and four free tickets to the park! Never mind. At least we knew that the beautiful bird was back home safe and sound and had the pleasure of the birds company for 24 hours! I'm sure we had photos but I have no idea where.
Your colleague could at least have offered you a couple of the tickets - that was a bit unfair. I'm very pleased the story had a happy ending, though.
