Osprey Sightings 2010

Hi.

Alan:  I really hope you don't stop posting here.  None of your post could ever be seen as detrimental to the wellbeing of birds, so as far as I'm concerned keep posting.

To be honest I wasn't initially going to join in with the arguments with Not a member, but as I said in my last post, he should be targeting people who cause genuine harm and not those who care passionately about ospreys. 

I've only been deeply interested in the welfare of wildlife since late 2007, yet feel as if I've learned decades worth of knowledge and will continue to learn so much more due to the info posted on sites such as this. 

This is my first season watching Ospreys at Loch Garten and Loch of the Lowes, as well as other sites when I get a chance.  I'm totally inspired by these majestic birds; mind you I'm the sort of bloke who finds a woodpigeon fascinating. :-)

Heron 77 I have said the same to Alan it would be sad if he deserted us.

Wood pigeons fascinate me too, I have a regular crowd of over a dozen who call in for peanuts that I leave in a separate place to my other feeders.  They are such nervous birds.  I get two squirrels regularly and they are frightened to death of them.

Dont worry Margobird and Heron77. I wont be deserting the forum altogether, only this thread. The sightings are freely available elsewhere anyway.

That is good news Alan and as you say sightinjg are freely available.  Mentioned Nimrod this morning and every stop he made was noted so I still don't quite understand.

Its all fine Margobird. The sightings were for migrating birds anyway and are now down to 2 or 3 a day so we will leave it at that. I have my own spreadsheet of the sightings for my personal use.

Worth also having a look at the Osprey Blog - See the comment below from Richard Thaxton (Loch Garten Site Manager) dated 19/04/10

"It has been brought to my attention that there is some disquiet amongst some of you about the level of detail being reported on osprey sightings, including the location of either known nests or potential likely nesting sites. I know the whole osprey arrival thing is of course very exciting, entirely understandable and fantastic to see/read, but I would nevertheless advise caution about adding too much detail about what you know or may have seen & where.

Sadly the threat from egg thieves continues for ospreys and other birds, and I've no doubt that such miscreants will tap into information that they can glean about the whereabouts of newly establishing pairs, from websites and forums such as this, and use such information in pursuit of their crimes.

It is therefore not in the interets of ospreys that locations of known nest sites or of prospecting birds, are divulged and so enter the wider public domain. To the genuine osprey fan, who cares deeply about them, other birds and other wildlife, I know that it is exciting to report or speculate as to where nests might be, and it can be hard not to share your knowledge or thoughts with other enthusiasts, BUT unfortunately you just never know quite who is out there reading the blog etc.

Your interest, excitement, passion, love & enthusiasm for ospreys is wonderful to behold here on the blog and elsewhere.  It is truely a great thing and overall can only further the conservation of ospreys and other wildlife. So I'm sorry if this post appears to want to curb that excitement & passion, it doesn't, but part of that passion needs to be to work towards safeguarding & enhancing the future of ospreys.  Please keep this in mind. LLoyd : I do not know if you are aware but all the information posted on this thread is already in the public domain as it is on the Birdguides site. Many people have never even seen an osprey and the publishing of these sightings enables them to perhaps go and see one for themselves.

No one has ever on this thread divulged the location of proven nesting sites.

This furore has been caused by one person who, by his own admission, is NOT a member of the RSPB.

As I have already said I will not be posting sightings on here as I dont want to upset other members not because I have been censored in any way.

I will continue to post these sightings on the independant Facebook group "Loch Garten Bloggers" if anyone is interested.

Hi Alan, Thanks for all your input with this thread I'm well aware that you're a fantastic contributor to this area. FYI we are also aware that the information been given out on this thread mirrors other content which is widely available in the public domain so it's not a problem at all for such posts to also be here - you're quite right! After all that’s what this community is all about! The comment I have posted above from Richard Thaxton is not in direct response to anything you have personally said. 

We were drawn to the fact that specific nest locations could be given out, which, as we all appear to agree is not in best interest of Osprey conservation. Either way, moderators cannot find any such comments of specific nest site details on the forums. As Richard Thaxtons words were posted elsewhere on the site (blog comments) I wanted to ensure that everyone was aware that the Loch Garten and other nests sites are under strict surveillance and the birds interest come before all else - that’s what the RSPB do best! By all means DO feel free to post your latest reported sightings here, I certainly will if I'm lucky enough to see one! Anything involving specific details of nest sites will of course be deleted immediately and we would ask all users to report such content to moderators.   

Therefore please do not worry about other concerns that seem to of been raised about us posting nest site details. However, we do ask that all users treat fellow "registered users" of this site with equal respect and remain relevant to the thread topic.
