Osprey Sightings 2010

This is the new thread for posting reports of osprey sightings, whether on the internet, in the press or in real life.

For the benefit of any new or less frequent viewers, it might be helpful if the first person to refer to a regular online source of information, for example Faune-Aquitaine, provided a link and a brief explanation of what the site is about.

Let the migration season commence!

NOT a member, I am so glad you are NOT A MEMBER!!!

There is something familiar in the pomposity of (his) posts.  They put me in mind of someone on another website who, also anonymously, went on and on about satellite tagging (or any ringing, for that matter) killing ospreys.  Any connection, I wonder?

  • Same thing went through my mind - but why would he bother to sign in with a new name (he joined 17th April).  Perhaps we just need to forget about him.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • The best policy is always to 'treat them with the greatest ignore'!  LOL!

  • Dear All,

Sorry to those who hoped I would go away, your recent posts have now provoked me to promise to keep on top of this forum and challenge and report to the appropriate authorities any posts that may endanger new pairs and sites.

To deal with the personal issues, I have never signed in with another name or been a 'Community' member under another user name. I am a ringer, a nest recorder and very strongly support the marking and satellite tagging of ospreys and the responsible recording of nests. Despite my moniker of  'not a member' I am a member of the BTO, the local ornithological society and the local wildlife trust. I choose not to be an RSPB member (although several members of my family are). My osprey credentials are also exemplary.

    Sorry to disappoint you.

I understand and share this forum's enthusiasm for ospreys and have tried to discuss my views with you in a mature fashion. I am shocked that instead of engaging with and thinking about the issues, (specifically the disclosure of established pairs and speculation about unguarded nests) you choose to forsensically analyse the subtext of any objection in the context of those who have disagreed with your views in the past or resort to accusations of pomposity.

My point is quite simply that the welfare of these birds is paramount. If you want more of this:

...just keep posting where these fantastic birds are pairing and nesting.

  • Hello Not a member.

It's great that you're highly concerned about the safety and welfare of ospreys, as everyone who posts here is.  However I've never seen any posts in this thread that I'd deem to put any ospreys in danger.  Also if there were any posts that could be seen as a security risk to an Amber Listed species, I'm certain that a site moderator would've taken action in regards to this.

Persecution of birds of prey still happens sadly.  This is not because of people posting sightings (taken from other websites e.g. Birdguids.) on this thread.  It is simply because there are still scumbags out there who think its okay to murder, or steal the eggs of such magnificent birds.  Hopefully one day such sickening practices will end.  I think you should be targeting those who genuinely cause harm to birds, and not the contributers to this thread, who have nothing but the saftey and success of ospreys on their minds when posting.

    Paul.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • Well said Heron 77 I am with you all the way.
