Never a dull day.....

It might have been overcast and a mere 11 degrees yesterday evening and the birdsong you hear on a warmer, sunny day was missing (I suspect that the various warblers and small birds which were in strong voice last weekend had decided to stay in with a hot cuppa) but somehow there always seems to be something in the area to brighten the day.   After about an hour of nothing but pigeons and magpies we had exhausted our own supply of tea and coffee so decided that we'd give it a few more minutes then head off to thaw out....

Glad we waited, as a Hobby swooped past on a mission and returned a few minutes later.....  An agitated noise heralded the arrival of a group of around 6 terns (not sure if Common or Arctic) who did a short swooping display, chattering madly - they really are beautiful birds.....   A male Marsh Harrier drifted across the fields....  Two Gadwall flew over from the Joist Fen area to land in one of the larger drainage ditches..... we saw them again as we headed back along the Drove.

We'd often wondered what was responsible for the medium sized holes in the bank of the drainage ditch as we drove past - and finally we got the answer.  Sitting on the sand outside the hole was a small fox cub.   Typically no chance for a photo.....

The evening was made complete by the sight of a Barn Owl flying up a waterway a little way off the Fen.   We'd stopped on a bridge and the owl flew under the bridge so that we were treated to a fantastic view down onto it, the creamy coffee colour highlighted against the blackness of the water.

Dull weather maybe, but never a dull day.....
