Hello,
Just joined the group as planning a visit on Thursday. Planning a first visit to Lakenheath Fen. Are there any seasonal tips, such current species to look for or any places to go, that you could pass on please. I have read the blogs and can't wait to visit.
Thanks
Stephen
Is it a bird...? Let's hope so!
Hello Stephen,
Thank you for your post. The two main focuses at this time of year are the poplar woods and the viewpoints overlooking the reedbeds. Golden orioles are present in small numbers in the poplar woods, and the best time to hear and see them is early in the morning. Lakenheath is currently the only place in Britain where they nest, so they understandably attract a lot of people to the reserve. The best place for our reedbed specialities such as bitterns, marsh harriers and bearded tits is the Joist Fen viewpoint. There are also still a few hobbys around and there are a couple of drake garganeys on the washland. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Thanks David. I have taken note of your advice. I will pass on any sights or sounds on Friday.
Hello David
Had a great day at Lakenheath-thanks for your advice. Heard the Golden Orioles a few times and had a view of something in the trees with naked eye only where the call was coming from. Lovely views of reed and cetti warblers, whitethroats, reed buntings and loads more. Heard the bittern booming. |It's lovely site. Will look to return another time.
