I want to put in a word for Eastwood Nature Reserve, which is 10 mins drive away from Dovestone, (on Mottram Road, you can park at Stalybridge Celtic football ground). It is owned by the RSPB (apparently the first one!) and managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust. It is a small but rather wonderful little wood, simply crawling with wildlife and especially birds. Hardly anyone goes there. Only open on Sundays between 10 and 4 (I think...check on CWT site). Well worth a visit. It's a pity RSPB aren't actively involved there...
