    Flamingo 

    A fairly quiet time on the lagoon. Both the new tern rafts on the lagoon have “slipped their anchors”. A coincidence that the other new raft in Crystal, plus the old one in Elf have also “slipped their anchors”?

    Radar Pool was again the most populated of the pools and held over 450 Shelduck. In addition there were a group of some 30 Black Headed Gulls squashed onto the smallest of the islands, approximately 40 Avocets spread across the islands as well as a handful of Lapwings, Oystercatchers and Redshanks.     I spent just over an hour with my dog and two-year old whilst my wife was at Bluewater. We hung around between the two viewing mounds looking over the black barn pools.

    Shelduck are still present in large numbers across the reserve, totalling more than 500. Small flocks of Goldfinches and Linnets were also seen in various locations around the reserve and Whitethroats, Chiffchaffs, Nightingales, Skylarks and Sedge Warblers were also present in several points around the reserve.     The Coastguards Pool is coming into its own. Over the weekend there were 11 Greenshanks, 2 Wood Sandpipers, 4 Ringed Plovers, Bar Tailed Godwit, numerous Redshanks, Lapwing, Shelducks etc on what is, because of the wind, fast becoming a damp patch.

    Although not as heavily populated with wildfowl as over the recent winter months, there is still plenty to see at Cliffe Pools.     Following a tip-off from Paul Larkin, I headed up to Coastguards Pool to view four newly arrived ruff. Whilst pointing them out to two visiting RSPB members from Enfield we were treated to a fantastic fly-by from a red kite. This made for species No. 42 on our visitors day list!     the warden at Cliffe Pools has been enjoying the arrival of spring today:

    On a beautiful spring afternoon it was wonderful to see some migrants had arrived; three garganey (two drakes and a duck) graced Black Barn Pools, a little ringed plover lifted off Crystal Pool calling excitedly and a little gull (adult winter) was seen just off the reserve.     the Medway Local RSPB Group had a walk at Cliffe Pools on 16th March, and here is their report and list of sightings:

    Despite the extremely dull and rather cold weather we had a very pleasant circuit of the whole Reserve and saw a total of 51 species.  Nothing unusual, but the highlight was a flock of 10 corn buntings seen from the Black Barn viewing mound.
