Many people have been talking about the southern emerald damselflies that can be seen along the track north of the second viewing mound. James Lowen (www.pbase.com/james_lowen) has sent us some stunning photographs:
thanks James!
We saw getting on for double figures today from c.4pm onwards. They were amongst the scrub & long grass between the track & the ditch to the right of the track walking from the 2nd viewing mound. The "2-tone" pterostigma (the small coloured area on the front edge of each wing towards the tip) is the clincher in terms of ID & is easy to see on perched insects. There were also examples of both of the other "regular" emerald species ie. common & scarce.
And a good selection of waders from the 1st viewing ramp mound too: spotted redshank, greenshank, ruff, green & common sandpiper, LRP & ringed plover, avocet, black-tailed godwit, lapwing, dunlin & redshank.
cheers
Gordon
