A good few years ago (about 10 lol) we were out for a walk when all of a sudden this pair of lapwings start mobbing and diving bombing us! It was amazing seeing them up close, and as it was spring we could guess why they were mobbing us and their behaviour was what helped us spot the chicks hidden in the grass close by! They were so hard to spot we'd probably never have even seen them had it not been for the parent birds trying to chase us off! We didn't hang around for long though, enough for a few "awww's" and then we were off! The lapwings work was far from over though, there was someone else coming along the path behind us lol
Millie & Fly the Border Collies
Hi Kat Tai,
I thought lapwings were nice & calm (timid maybe). I've had gulls bombing me that wasn't a nice experience.
hi bird mum i hd aload of gulls fly over the garden not living far from the sea i do see them but they where very much inland to day must be very rough at sea
Hi bev, I'm in the Midlands, they are all here lol as far away from the sea as possible!
Hi KatTai
That is exactly what Lapwings do to protect their young and their territory. They are ground nesters. and they need to protect their young from all sorts of problems, and who can blame them.
They are birds of virtue. They are concerned about any intruders to their nesting youngsters.
Many years ago I had a similar thing while walking past an open field, and Lapwings are quite mild mannered with their variations of attack compared with some birds. They are very polite.
Meantine, standing under a Tern coloney while they are nesting would make you think without a hat on your head. EEKKK! Guardee Loo comes to mind with a big EEEEKKK!!!!
Regards
Kathy and Dave

Yup, unfortunately for them if they hadn't done anything we'd never have even noticed the chicks at all as we wouldn't have realised they were there! They were so well camouflaged, yet they were just a couple of feet into the field.
I've been to the Farne Islands a few times and the terns are really determined defenders of their chicks lol Even with a hat it hurts! Saying that, I'd happily go back lol
