Hi there
Just a general question to ask here
Does unopened bird food have an expiry date on the packet.
If so should we heed to the mentioned date.
If it not opened is it alright to keep the bird food as long as possible.

I've never known birdfood have an expiry date on it, except maybe suet products (unless I've dreamt it). Although I was always lead to believe its ok as long as its stored in a cool, dry place and used within 3 months of being opened
Hello.It think the only sorts of birdfood that may have an expiry date (e.g. use within 3 months) are things such as suet products or peanuts. I think it's really a case of looking out for things that have gone rotten or rancid, and discarding them. The advice with such foods is generally if it looks or smells bad, then it is. Storage is important and it's best to use strong non-deteriorating containers. The tubs that certain RSPB products come in can be used over and over again and make excellent seed containers.Paul.

I think i will be watching out a lot more for certain foodstuffs. It does not apply to foodstuffs so much at the moment because the birds are eating the food as quickly as we are buying it.
We put our food in an old wheelie bin out in the garden, and it stays in there. We want to keep it in the cooler climes outside.
I have noticed that Fat does not cope well in a warm house. The fatballs go all squiggy and sticky. Better of outside so the fat remains hard
I keep my empty Mealworm containers for seeds etc.. and it is airtight too.
