A week of Snow and Ice.....

Hi there

How are people coping with the bad snow at the moment?

Dave managed to get to work from Bedford to Glasgow this morning - thank goodness.

Love to hear what we all have to say about the white stuff,

Time to get all the thoughts of our chests

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • Hi Kathy, it has only just started to snow here but plenty forecast. We stocked up with food  and bird seed so we will see what we wake up to tomorrow. It certainly looks bad on the news tonight.

  • Hi Blackbird

It started snowing here (near Reading) about 6pm. Just looked outside and it looks like about 4 to 5 in has fallen already and it's still snowing.

In anticipation I stocked up with food from the supermarket today and I've got plenty of bird food in reserve.

    More shovelling tomorrow !

    Tony

  • My goodness Blackbird, Dave has a long commute. How often does he have this journey to do?

There are 3 airports in our area. All 3 were closed this morning. There were no buses running. I don't know about trains. 250 of our schools were closed today. Roads were closed all over the place. I imagine there were thousands of people who didn't make it to work. I expect all the shops were empty, and the businesses must have suffered greatly. The elderly and infirm will have had severe problems.

But me and hubby? On a selfish note, we were warm and comfortable at home, did the supermarket dash yesterday so cupboards full. Went for our usual afternoon walk to the river with the dogs, and apart from having to be careful in some places, the snow was deep, and crisp and even as the song says, so we managed fine. The scenery was stunning and the dogs loved pretending to be huskies. Plenty of kind folk leave bird food on the fence posts and under the shrubberies and trees - even fat balls were left.

I have been in and out of the garden all day, clearing patches and scattering bird food. It kept getting covered again, so I just kept repeating it. The birds came in their droves, and they all had their fill. The little sparrows kept disappearing in the snow, the starlings got snow stuck to their beaks, the pigeons and jackdaws were skiing down the roof tops, the robins looked wonderful, the blackbirds were being over aggressive with each other but not with the other birds, and all was well at number 41.

This was the scene in our garden that met me when I got up this morning, and this is nothing compared to what it was like last week.

    Cheers, Linda.

    Hi Brenda

I am like you.  It has just started to snow in Bedford now, and it is still 'icing on the cake' at the moment.

I am sure that there will be a good dollip of snow tonight.

The weather forecast makes it all look quite drastic at the moment.

Hope that we are all coping, along with our feathered friends

    Regards

    Hi Sparrow.

Thank you for asking about Dave. Dave gets the train from Bedford to Luton, and EasyJet from Luton to Glasgow.

He lives close to the airport, and the train stations.

He has a 15 min walk to his workplace from his rented flat.

    So not so bad.

    I cannot see us being together next weekend if the weather carries on like this {sad}

Luton airport is on alert as I speak.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Kathy, it must be worrying for you when Dave has to travel up to Glasgow when we are experiencing this weather nationwide.

PS. just seen your reply to Sparrow.

  • Hi Blackbird,

I really feel for you. Many years ago, in a previous life, my hubby was a civil engineer and was obliged to work near Harlech in Wales for 18 months. He commuted every Monday morning, but came home on Thursday evenings. When he was away, absolutely everything that could go wrong, went wrong, every week it seemed. Even the blasted boiler blew up one day! It made me realise just what a wimp I am!!!!

You must be worried with all this bad weather.

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Sparrow, I am quite familiar with your part of the country. There is some lovely walking to do there and the scenery is beautiful. Our son went to Stonyhurst and I can remember one winter especially when we had some very hairy driving on the snow and ice on one of our regular visits.

Brenda: Thank you for caring about my OH.  I hope that the weather clears up and spring is close to us now.

Sparrow: Thank your for your kind thoughts about my situation.  The weather does play a big part in if we do not see each other as much as we want too.

Not too bad with being on my own, as quite independant in my own way, but I still miss Dave {soppy me}.  So I know what you mean about time apart for your OH

    Regards

  • Hi Brenda,

We may have bumped into one another at some time! I know I am prejudiced, but you are quite right. I live in a very beautiful place and am forever thankful for it. We are so lucky to have miles and miles of walking country, far more open spaces than built up areas, with moors, meadows, hills, forests, rivers, yet at the same time we have wonderful facilities for everyone, no matter what pastimes you enjoy. Lancashire often carries a certain bad name for being industrial, with outside toilets and no electricity, cloth caps, clogs and ferets, but this is far from the truth! And we also have Stonyhurst - a beautiful looking school as you will know. But right now all we have is snow!

    Cheers, Linda.
