A Winter Garden Full of Birds

I spent an hour with my coffee and new camera attempting to figure out the best methods in an attempt to get some half decent photo's.

I'm totally new to this high tech Digital SLR photography, but I must admit I'm hooked!!!

I had a number of species visiting today and here are a few shots of some of them. The weather got worse and the poor Feral Pigeon even has snow on his tail feathers.

Out of focus !!!!

Some shots better than others, good job you can just erase the bad ones.

Anyway I had a laugh at the same time. I took lots and will upload some to my gallery, if you get chance have a look. I love the ones of the Collared Doves and the (Goldfinches of course) !!!

Best wishes Buzzard

  • Hi Buzzard

Spose now that you've got your posh camera, you'll be another one showing us how to do it!   Had to bring in the Goldfinches again didn't you!  I do have to admit though they are great photos (mumble mumble) but your poor robin looks a bit forlorn, not the photo but the subject.

What's the zoom capabilities on your camera, we have a good zoom on the IA setting on ours but even better on the manual setting (400x) but this does open me up to camera shake.  However got me a tripod for Chrimbo and this has lessened it and the zoom works out really well........watch your back, i'll soon be catching up with you! :-)

Kezmo the lens that I'm using is a Zuiko Digital 40-150mm 1:3-5-4-5

I'm taking the shots using all of the exposures then trying to see what looks right!!!

The weather is pretty poor and the light is rubbish at the moment.

  • Wonderful photos Buzzard! You probably already know this but I meant to say, re the arthritis (which I referred to in another of your posts), using the Sport Mode setting on the camera helps as that will compensate for a certain amount of shake. Don't know if it is the same for all cameras but on mine it's the man running.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Oh Buzzard, what a wonderful collection of birds in your garden, and brilliant photos. I can't believe you have never previously been interested in the photography side of things, they look brilliant to me.

All this camera talk is above my head I'm afraid. My little camera is a Coolpix 5200 and I can't even make such a simple  pocket camera work properly.

However, I do know what Squirrel is saying as regards the sports mode. It is a little man running on mine as well. It does give clearer pictures if you tend to shake, and also if the subject is moving, as birds do.

    Cheers, Linda.

    Hi Buzzard

Your pictures are beautiful as ever.

The Sparrow looks really fluffed up at the moment with all the cold weather.

    Thank you for sharing.

I have my camera set on auto at the moment but intend to understand more about the workings of the camera now

As you know it takes time to get to grips with the workings.

    Regards

    Kathy and Buzzard

  • Hi Buzzard, Great photos , your obviously getting the hang of digital slr.

Picture 3, the Blue Tit on the feedeer.  Is that filled with the fruit pellets.?  I;m not having any luck with them. The nuts in the other feeder get eaten but when I filled a feeder with the pellets alone, I had no luck. A couple of days ago I layered a feeder with nuts and pellets but they don't seem to like them. Its a bit of a bgr since I bought loads after seeing them at the local reserve feeding station.

Hi Susan, thankyou for the kind coments.

The feeder is full of fruit pellets, a favourite for the Longtail Tits, Starlings and Blue Tits.

Hopefully my photo's will improve, I'm looking to purchase a 70-300mm lens which should give even better detailed photo's.

    My Regards Buzzard

  • Lovely collection of birds that visit your garden, Buzzard.  And a great set of photos too.

The trouble is with photography that once you get into it there's always something else you want, LOL!

My Cannon 400d started off fairly simple and things have gradually gotten more and more (not to mention expensive!).  Recently I changed to a 100-400mm lens and hope to get some good shots with that

I found the aperture priority mode(s) to be useful with photographing birds, not to mention the mutli-shot shutter setting (al servo I think it is), especially since birds don't keep still long!

Don't know if that meant much or was of any use to you, either way keep up the good work :o)
