On Saturday afternoon (19th Dec) I saw a hawfinch for the first time ever! It was sitting in an apple tree, ignoring the bird feeders hanging nearby, and stayed there, doing nothing for about an half an hour. I wish I'd taken a photo instead of just staring through binoculars at it!
Hi Scrabbler
Welcome to the forum.
Aw nevermind perhaps you'll get another chance. I would have done the same thing - too scared to move in case I frightened it away and also not wishing to miss him through the bins

Hi Scrabbler - welcome to the forum. It is always difficult with a first ever sighting to decide what to do first however I think spending the time watching and getting to know it is the most important thing of all - still haven't managed to see one - its on my list with Waxwing as two to find!
Welcome Scrabbler and well done you!! Never seen a hawfinch!!
(Lucybob - waxwings are on my wishlist too!!)

Thanks everyone for the welcome! I feel very honoured to have seen the hawfinch, but no sign of it since! As for waxwings, several years ago a flock of them sat in a tree at the end of our road - it was early on in the year, can't remember exactly, and very exotic looking they were too.
At the moment it's mostly sparrows and squabbling blackbirds (why do they spend so much time chasing each other off, instead of tucking in?) in the garden, with the odd wood pigeon (I call them B52s!) stomping in the snow, plus robin, starlings, bluetits and great tits flitting about.
Hi Scrabbler and welcome from me also. How wonderful to have seen a hawfinch. I have never seen that bird or a waxwing... so far.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
B52 - what an apt name for our lovely plump friends!
I christened one of mine Fatso (for obvious reasons) and then realised I needed to be careful when I addressed it by that name as Mrs Next Door isn't exactly Twiggy!
Hello Scrabbler, I have never seen a hawfinch or a waxwing so I am very jealous.
Our favourite fat friend is called 747 and at times doesn't even manage 'take off' very well.
Hi Scrabbler.Welcome to the forum. Must've been brilliant to have seen a hawfinch.Paul.
