In the snow

As we have had a fair bit of the white stuff, and with some favourable light this morning I spent half an hour taking photos of some of the birds in our garden and would like to share them with you:-

Robin

Goldfinch

Dunnock

House Sparrow

Light Sussex and Calder Ranger, named Edward and Agnes, yes Edward is a strange name for a 'girl' chicken but unless you get inside the mind of a six year old child........................How about 'Eggward'?

    Hi ND

    Love your pictures with your birds in the snow

    The detail is fabulous - the drip of water from the Robins beak is there {big smile}

    Love them all a lot.

    Are you chickens friendly so you can pick them up?

    Love their names

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Brilliant captures ND. Top class.

    p.s. Deepest sympathies to Edward (who is probably leading a confused life!). But it could be worse. My friend's daughter named their cat Fonz (after Fonzie in Happy Days). Friend felt such a wally calling that out morning, noon and night for over 16 years......

    The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

    The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures with us at this snowy time. They are really good, & I did enjoy them.

    LOL at the name of the cat, Squirrel.

    I can just imagine the name 'Fonz' echoing around the neighbourhood

  • ND, lovely photographs. I think the name is great when there is a child involved  but I bet you are tired of having to explain it to people.

    Squirrel, I would have loved to have been at the vets when they called out Fonz as the next patient and everybody in the waiting room waiting to see who would call their pet by that name!

    We saw a Woodcock in our garden today and as far as I know it is still in a corner bed hidden in the shrubbery.

    We have six chickens, aswell as those mentioned we have Foggy, Misty, Bluebell and Flora, Flora is the most friendly, she was found living in a pub car park and is alway in my shed when I am about, has even been known to wander into the kitchen and admire her reflection in the oven (brave).

    Re the name 'Edward', we figured this out a few weeks after we got her.  we bought  two new chickens and let our sons pick and name them, Jack named Bluebell and Olly named Edward, a few weeks later when reading a Thomas the Tank Engine story we discovered an incicdent involving a cow called 'Bluebell' and the engine involved was, yes, you've guessed it.....................'Edward', .............amazing how a child's mind work.

    BTW, we're just as bad, are  cats are called 'wellington' and 'Bootsie', I have often walked down the lane calling 'Welly.......Boots"

    Wow, that's a great one for the garden list.

    I think the strangest bird we had in ours, was a few years back a Water Rail wandering along the edge of the lawn.  Strangeley enough I saw a Water Rail on my local patch this morning, my first one for some time.

  • Norfolk Dipper, I must admit we couldn't believe what we were seeing at first. I have only seen water rail in the grasses on the marshes, never in the garden.

    Hi ND

    Love the names of your chickens, and they all have their characters too. Your kids will love them.

    Dear Flora, and she sounds lovely to have around LOL - not a great thing to find her in a pub car park {whew}

    Your cats names well what can I say - hehe

    Hi Brenda

    Love the fact you have a Woodcock - now that is something else to find in your garden

    ND: A Water Rail wow - and here we all think how shy they are supposed to be.

    A Male Pheasant in one of our gardens was an added bonus - that is all the excitement we have had, other than a Yellow Hammer M/F, and a Shrew feeding off the feeders

    Regards
