Hi all
I hope you don't mind but can I tell you about my day?
We woke up this morning to -3 outside, after getting dressed, went out to the garden to feed the birds (spared them from my usual attire of dressing gown and wellies - far too cold!) , who were all sitting around tapping their feet waiting for me. Unusually for us, as we live on the coast, we obviously had quite a bit of a frost, everything was really white that you could almost think we had had slight snow. The sun was up with pink streaks in the sky, everything looking really crisp and fresh. Absolutely lovely. It was the sort of morning when you would like to dress up really warmly, step into your walking shoes and go for a really long walk, breathe in the cold air and revel in just being out there. Do you know the ones I mean?
Whilst defrosting the car, I heard a very weird sound and looked up, to my surprise, in fact my first thought was "what the h*** why is there a teradactyle flying over my head?" to watch a massive bird fly over and then gently land on the roof of the house across the road. It was a heron that just sat there, looking very alone and really emphasised because of the whiteness of the frost across the roof. It seemed odd to see it on a roof, such a big bird. A starling sitting on the same house's aerial was even looking at it a bit dubiously. As it was bin day today, someone then came out along the road to slam down their recycling bin which startled the heron, it flew off very elegantly back towards the backwaters. It was so lovely to watch that I was still standing there with the scraper in my hand long after it had gone.
On the way to work, the sun was shining still casting a pink glow across the field, temperature hadn't reached above 0 but I saw a kestrel hovering over the hedgerow, then what appeared to be at least 50 pheasant all feeding in the field.
Later on whilst at work it started to snow, not thick admittedly but it coincided with the children practising for their carol concert on Friday (some of you may know I work in a school) - it was just so lovely. Even when the three of us in the office attempted to sing "Let it snow" - even the children in Y2 laughing at our efforts really didn't phase the moment!
I'm not a great wordsmith but today was a really lovely day - so much so that when I got home I realised belatedly I should have gone to the supermarket on the way home as we didn't have anything for tea! - hey ho pasta surprise it was.
Regards
Kerry

Kezmo, what a magical day you had. All you needed to round it off was for Father Christmas to fall down your chimney carrying something nice for your tea! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Cheers, Linda.

Kezmo what a lovely day, and the pasta surprise I'll bet just topped it off, it sounds delish

It is so lovely when you can enjoy such a perfect day and appreciate the simple joys of life. Hope the spell doesn't break and tomorrow holds the same happiness.
Hi Kezmo.
That sounds like a really lovely day. We had a heron visit the neighbouhood about 10 years ago. I'll always remember how elegant it looked perched on a neighbour's roof.

Hi Kezmo
That was a beautiful description, I almost felt as though I was there with you. We have a local heron who can pop up in any area of the town and (s)he too is happy to perch on whatever roof takes his/her fancy. Sometimes that includes the summer house of the people two doors away. It's quite startling when something catches your eye and you look up expecting to see, say, a wood pigeon or magpie only to find a heron staring back at you!
And Paul, you'll have to stop doing it for a while soon now as Santa and his sleigh will need clearance for roof landings!
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Good for you Kezmo!! It sounded a wonderful day! Thank you for sharing it with us!! (I love pasta!!! :-))

Thanks Kezmo, a great description. A very nice read to start the day.
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Thanks all for your replies.
I'm so excited, it's snowing here, really really big flakes as big as your fist - yey I love it!
hi Kezmo
Loved your day report, and to see a Heron, and a BoP was a fabulous sight to behold.
I am not surprised you stood rooted watching the Heron as it flew off. Pity that your camera was not at hand - those moments that we all miss on occasions.
Yes, I think we are going to all have a White Xmas with lots of birds sitting in the snow.
