Fledglings at this time of the year?

I saw something quite strange today. I was watching the fat ball feeders when half a dozen long tailed tits arrived; one of the ones on the fat ball was feeding another. They can’t still be fledglings, can they?

The one being fed wasn’t puffing it’s feathers out and flapping its wings, neither did it have the yellow around its beak.

Build it and they will come.

  • Boyfriend - Girlfriend, bonding exercise perhaps..?

  • Having observed our house sparrows, the juveniles will often 'try it on' with their parents even when fully fledged - maybe the long tailed tits do the same!

But in the absence of begging behaviours, the bonding thing sounds likely too :-)

I would say it is youngsters trying their luck to a point to see if food is on the go!

Otherwise I think it may be practice 'flirting' 'parental' practice in the bird world
