I swear there is either a peacock that sounds like a child, or a child that sounds like a peacock around here somewhere! I doubt it is the former as I'm sure I'd have seen a peacock if there was one hanging around somewhere but it is so funny that I keep hearing these peacock style calls! This time it was at half passed six in the morning! Or is there something else that sounds like something crossed between a peacock and a child?

Starlings mimic almost anything from other birds (in my case red kites) to telephones (enormous fun for me when they mimic next door's when Mrs Next Door is half way up the garden pegging out the washing).
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

Lol Squirrel! Wonder if the starlings have a good laugh too! ;-)
Can't think of any other birds that would make a peacock noise though!

Hi KatTai
I was wondering about Starlings, as they copy everything.
Here is a link of the real thing, and a picture taken of the beauty itself taken Old Warden at Shuttleworth not to far from where I stay.

This is a photo of a peacock displaying taken at Bodnant Gardens in North Wales:
Ah never thought of starlings...would they be mimicking that early in the morning though when it is still dark? It never started getting light until well after 8 this morning. I don't see that many starlings around here either, there are a few in the church at the back but they are roosting high up in the steeple, the noise I hear seems to come from quite low down. Maybe it is a wee kiddy somewhere.
Oh, and I usually hear this noise when it is getting dark!
They could well be. All of my "regulars" were particularly vocal this morning well before 6.30 a.m. (chiefly because the feeder tables were empty). The male blackbirds were making enough noise to wake the dead and the starlings were quick to join in as they never like to miss out on anything!

Hmmmm, I think the only way this will be solved will be to find the culprit...there was a blackbird up at my aunts that did a perfect mimic of a mobile phone and confused the hell out of me because I thought someone had dropped their phone lol Maybe he has moved down here to confuse me further lol
I still believe it is Starlings as they are very vocal at the moment. Of course to say it could be a stray Peacock that has escaped from somewhere,
Never heard of a Blackbird sounding any different than they are - they make chinking distress calls, and sing and that is it,
Anyway, if you find your culprit let us know.

Haha you should hear Mr swallowed-a-mobile-phone Blackbird. He was having a right laugh at me as I looked for the non-existance lost phone! Didn't believe it was him until he opened his beak and made the phone ring tone again! Twice he got me before I realised it was him!
