Blackbirds

Hi there

In the last month or so I have got a regular 'tame' Mr and Mrs Blackbird.

Mrs Blackbird comes right up to the patio door and, and then flies up to sit on one of the higher branches of the Hawthorn Tree that we have to get a better view into the house.  She does everything to get my attention fro her mealworms

On the other hand Mr Blackbird, he seems to be happy to let me walk right up to him (while I talk to him), and I have managed to a few pictures of him.  He was grubbing amongst the leaves for some tit bits.  I was only feet away from him.

I am so disappointed about the last picture show here.  It would have been a superb shot if i had all of Mr blackbirds head - dash it. {sad}

Also the battery went flat as I tried to get a better (last picture) of Mr Blackbird. (sigh)

The picture that got away.

Regards

Kathy and Dave

  • The pictures are lovely, and he seems quite unconcerned. What do you say to him?

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Sparrow, I am definitely a candidate for the ' bird whispering club'.  I always talk to the garden birds and blackbirds seem to be the friendliest. Thanks for the photographs Kathy. My husband has ordered my new camera so I can foresee some comical photos from me when trying to get familiar with using it.

  • Wow. great photos Kathy. I also talk to "my" birds. Some of it is wholly unrepeatable - like when they fly off just as I press the shutter button, but they are quite happy for me to approach while talking quietly. My female chaffinch is the most comfortable with me in close proximity. I can get to within one foot of her and she puts her head on one side in exactly the same way as a budgie in a cage listens when you talk to it. My robins, on the other hand, deal with it in a quite absurd way. They let me get really close but then turn their backs to me - which smacks of "I cannot see you therefore you are not there".!

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • There's nothing wrong with talking to the birds! sometimes I find they are the only ones that listen - OH has a great way of saying "mmmm" in that way when you know they are not listening - at least the birds seem to like my voice!

Lovely photos of your blackbird blackbird - I've had a few in the past who seem to like my waffle - they even used sit on top of the whirlygig washing line as I hung out the washing as if to hear me better!

  • The maid was in the garden, pegging out the clothes,

When down came a blackbird and pecked off her nose.

    Sorry Kezmo, I couldn't resist!

    Cheers, Linda.

  • Hello Blackbird!

Great to hear other people talk to their birds! i thought i was crazy!

I house sat a while back for a family member and every morning i would have my tea in the garden. A blackbird would always be there so i started to say ' good morning' and give him a bit of breakfast,on the 3rd day, a snail was right near my chair and in no time the blackbird was beside me and smashing the snail on the slab, he had a great feast! It was amazing to see him eat while being so close to him. My in-laws were surprised to come home to a blackbird waiting at the back door for a bit of breakfast, so now they are stuck with him! their great birds, will have to get some pics of him!

  • Excellent stories everyone! Great to know how many of us have 'relationships' with our birds!

I have a male blackbird that sits on the fence just outside the back door when a cat's about and 'chucks' very loudly, knowing I'm sure that I shall come flying out of the door and chase the cat away! Lol!

    Hi there

Thank you for your kind replies everyone.

No there is nothing wrong with talking to a Blackbird any day as they like to listen to you

I had another chat with Mr Blackbird today while he sat in the Hawthorn Tree right above my head

Must have the gift of the gab LOL

The last picture show that Mr Blackbird has not got very shapely knees LOL

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Kathy, he is a good looking chap so don't make comments about his knees. It is just that he is crouched down so long as he listens to you talking.
