I braved the elements today to dig a bed at the end of our new pond. The ground is quite wet, so have planted a few plants that will like it. I also spread out part of the spoil heap from digging the pond and planted a couple of plants there too. When I finally decided that I had done enough and went indoors I was amazed to see the number of birds that descended on the garden.
There must have been at least 20 sparrows, half a dozen starlings, 4 collared doves, a robin and a few bluetits! The sparrows particularly loved the area where I had been working, even trying to dust bath in the damp soil. It's good to feel I am helping the sparrow survive. We have only lived here since May this year and I'm really pleased to see the birds coming into the garden. I have a birdtable and feeders and now the pond so I am hoping to see even more wildlife in the coming months and years.
Hi Gilly and welcome to the forum. It is good news that the birds noticed your activity so quickly but then they were probably sitting watching you as I have no doubt some were hoping to grab the tasty worms from the disturbed soil. Here, mowing the lawn has much the same effect.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Welcome to the forum Gilly! I echo Squirrel's comments about them making the most of an opportunity!

Hello Gilly,
Welcome to the forum, I do hope you enjoy it. I wish you every success with your new pond - I'm sure everyone else will agree that you have exciting times ahead!
There's nothing more rewarding than after you've done a bit of digging in the garden to watch the birds come down and look for bugs and worms. Do keep us all up-to-date with your garden wildlife.
Hello Gilly, welcome to the forum.Fantastic news that so many birds came to appreiate your efforts. It's great to hear about so many sparrows, as I get good numbers of these birds in my garden and they provide endless entertainment. I'm sure over the next few months the number of bird species and other wildlife will increase as more species become confident enough to visit your garden.

Hi Gilly, and welcome.
Good news you are getting some lovely birds, and I also think it is great to hear about your sparrows. I have a colony of about 35 to 40 who give me hours of amusement. Good luck with the pond.
Cheers, Linda.
