Watching the Robins in my garden is turning into something of a blood sport. Ever since moving in I have had some wonderful contacts and sights with these beautiful birds. Once I even had one eating out of the palm of my hand (it was fond of shortbread but then so am I!) One year we had one poor little chap with a bald head, who survived all winter like that. How does something like this,
Become this!
I know all about their need to fight and compete, and it is well known just how bad they can be to each other! Why they or for that matter we can’t seem to learn there is another way, plenty to go around! It is something I will never understand.
So far of the three, yes three, involved all are alive. Some doing better than others.
Both shots taken five min's after the fighting stopped!
I will try to keep up to date with them.
John
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Hi John, his right leg and foot does look swollen, but at least it isn't hanging lifeless, as it was in the last pic. It must be very painful for him, but if the foot is broken, as i susspect it is, the swelling will help re-align the bones and hold them steady, while the pain will protect the healing foot almost as well as a splint would. Our male magpie was in a territorial dispute early this year, and we thought he might loose a foot and be able to fly about as well as a domestic chook because of a badly damaged wing. He still walks with a bit of a limp in very cold weather (like us), but after many months his wing is now held perfectly, and his flying ability is magnificent. I hope this little robin heals as well.
Smiles, Jan.
John, thanks for replying. Feel really sorry for poor robin. No bird or creature of any description can ever tell us how much pain they are in.
Hello all!
Having been away for a week or so, I have returned to find no sign of the injured one. Hope he has just moved south to a warmer place. There is still quite a fight going on but with two very strong looking and intact Robins.
I will keep my eyes open and update as I go.
Thanks for the update John! Let's hope you are right about him 'migrating'!

Hi John, thanks for letting us know what is occurring. It's fingers crossed for the little injured one. You never know, now that you are back he / she may pop up again - if he / she has simply been keeping out of harm's way.

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
John, thank you so much for letting us know. Hope you are right. As I have said, I have never seen robins fight to such extremes as you are seeing,
Great pictures.
The fighting ones are good, just a tad upsetting to be honest.

Its been such a beautiful day I spent some time in the garden tidying around, mainly at the front of the house, after a while I went around to the back garden and sat for a drink and a think! I noticed a little movement at the base of a hedge when out came our little Robin friend with the trailing leg. By the time I recovered from the surprise and reached for the camera. He/she had hoped up onto the wheel of the barrow.
It hides the bad leg as best it can now. I am not sure where its been but it is nice to see it back.
Unfortunately all hell broke loose and two robins came one from each side and the chase went off into the hedge out of sight. no pictures, too fast, and the sun went down.
Hope he/she is still around tomorrow.
Thanks John. Nice to know you have seen the robin. Sorry he is still injured. Maybe you are going to have to make a home for it !

There you are.... and it's great news. That's made my day. Thanks John. Obviously a determined little bird!
