Did you Make your Nature Count?

The results of the RSPB's 2009 wildlife stock-take were  released today - http://www.rspb.org.uk/naturecount/

A quarter of British gardens are home to foxes and hedgehogs. The results also revealed that you’re far more likely to see foxes in urban than in rural gardens. 38% of those taking part in urban areas recorded regular fox sightings, compared to 23% in rural areas.

In comparison, more hedgehogs were spotted in rural gardens (28%), compared to urban gardens (15%).

One in ten also reported seeing badgers in your garden with 6% seeing them regularly

  • Hi LRB

Thank you for your results of the latest survey.

Sadly I did not participate this year due to moving house.

Bedford - Blackbirds are doing well everywhere and the House Sparrows numbers are up too.

We have had 2 Hedgehogs at one time in our garden, and I am sure it was a parent and a youngster.  They devoured the food from the Birds ground feeders later on at night.

We have had Tawny Owls calling over the Autumn months from a tree close to our house.  I counted 2-3 of them calling all at one time - both male and females.

It is sad to see there are no Red Squirrels recorded, but many Greys recorded {not so good}.  Heard that they are some Black Squirrels around now though they are really Greys gone black - not been lucky to see them yet.

Seen a regular Kestrel hunting, and a Barn Owl close to the A421 - though the Barn Owl has not been around so much as of late.

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Interesting results! Thanks for posting them LRB!

Certainly reflects my rural garden as I have regular hedgehog visits but no foxes! The only foxes I see are fleeting glimpses across a field if I'm lucky!!

Bad news about the hirundines & swifts...

  • Thanks for the alert, LRB. Possibly the longest Excel spreadsheet I've ever seen!
