Goldfinches

Start stocking up on feed, they'll eat you out of house and home....and the weather is getting cooler.

I really like Goldfinches, they look so exotic and the little 'chirrup' sound they make is very endearing

We're in Cornwall and have left dandelions in our "lawn" and teasles in our borders to attract such feeders.  We, quite regularly get Goldfinches "bending over" the seed heads of the dandelions on our "lawn".

We are also blessed with being visited by Goldcrests (possibly nesting near-by) during the Spring and Summer months.  We have a large "Christmas tree" in our front garden and quite a number of firs around us which they (and the Tits) seem to love.  :-)

we feel so privileged to have these lovely birds visiting our garden for the first time this year -

Hi Malcolm... what a lovely photo. I am lucky enough to have a couple of irregular visitors and I am always so pleased to see them back. But so far they have only visited my feeders during the summer months. I'd love to know where they go for the winter as you would think that would be the time I'd see them more frequently.

Lovely pics everyone! Goldies are one of my faves too! (Mind you I've got quite a few! ;-))

Here's one I took at a local nature reserve!

Excellent photos everyone. I don't know how you get them to stay still for long enough as mine, although on the feeder perches, gently swing it so that it rocks to and fro. You can actually see them doing it - like a kiddie on a playground swing!

I feel a bit miffed actually :) My OH wanted to introduce, what he called, a better class of bird! (some people are so picky!) so a few years ago we started putting niger seed out to attract Goldfinches without success.   Refusing to give in, I refreshed the food when needed and persevered and saw to our great delight, 2 goldfinches at the beginning of spring (last year).  They disappeared and only came back at the end of the summer.  This is how it has been this year. They came in spring and I have yet to see them return.    I have friends who live not far away who are awash with Goldfinches - why not our garden?  I get most other birds.

I love your pictures by the way........I just wished they were in my garden!!
