Baby woodpigeons

We often wonder why we have never seen baby woodpigeons in the garden, despite three regular adults at the feeders.  Today, the pair brought a young one for the first time - it ate on the ground, while one of the adults fed from the seed catching tray under the seed feeder (its usual feeding perch!).  Baby is very plump, so has been well fed by its parents.  We are particularly pleased to see this pair with a child, as the male was quite badly hurt around the neck in the spring (?sparrowhawk damage) - but has made a good recovery.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • We have a pair who visit our garden every day and they are funny things, and very endearing. They entertain us with their head cocking and their staring at us through the window when the ground feeder needs topping up! We had two intruder woodpigeons arrive one day and our resident one was quite perturbed and set about chasing them away. One legged it immediately but the other was more persistant so Woody had to work a bit harder. He didn't shoo it off and take off after it in flight...no, it waddled round the lawn after it, all the way round the lawn!! They looked like a pair of ducks! Sadly there doesn't appear to have been any babies. Maybe next year.
