The last couple of weeks we seem to be getting a HUGE amount of siskins in the garden, we live against a small woodland and you can hear them all in the trees - it's amazing and like a wall of bird song.... but... they are decimating the bird feeders, food that would have taken 1-2 weeks for the normal visitors to go through is being stripped in a day and though they are not actually bullying the other birds we are definitely seeing less while the feeders we being so overwhelmed. Any idea how long this might last, they are very sweet little birds but from a supply pov this is not sustainable, and from a wildlife pov I'd like to see some of my regulars back!
Shouldn't last much longer as they'll be off to breed fairly soon. Unless your small woodland is also well supplied with siskin friendly trees, they'll be breeding further afield.
That's what I was hoping, there are likely Siskin friendly trees but not enough to contain all of these and those who already inhabit them. I am happy to feed them like this a few weeks a year, but everyday will result in me having to stop feeding everyone and that makes me sad to think of as the last couple of years have been amazing for the variety we get
Siskins aren't really generalist, so changing the food type would probably work.
Good to know, I'll take the sunflower hearts away if they hang around much longer - thanks!
