Does anyone have any idea how I can discourage crows from trashing my hanging bird feeders every early morning while still encouraging the smaller birds?
We live in the middle of farmland in Norfolk, so crows and jackdaws are a fact of life. But there is plenty of food for them out in the fields and hedgerows. I have 3 hanging feeders, 2 with mixed seed and 1 with mealworms. The crows have learned to hang on the feeders' perches with one foot while still flapping their wings and stabbing the feeding openings to get the seed. the mealworm feeder has no perches so they must grab the wire mesh and hang on to that! They empty all the feeders every day and often manage to break the feeders off the hangars to land on the ground and spill the seed.
The smaller birds don't get a look in.
