Whilst driving through Berry Pomeroy, the other day, I saw some bird activity in front, circling above. I immediately spotted amongst them a buzzard, a common sight. But as I got closer I noticed almost among the crows and gulls, a couple of red kites. I can truly say that after living in Devon for over 5 years, this was the first time I’ve seen them in Devon. They were unmistakable to me, their size, forked tails and their finger-like wing tips. Unfortunately I was unable to stop in the narrow lanes, to attempt a photo.
I used to live in the Chiltern hills in Buckinghamshire, where they were a daily sight. I’m now looking out for them when I’m driving around in the hills and farm land in my area. I’d be interested in any other local sightings.
