Another first for me this morning

Last week I had Mr. Chaffinch, and this morning I had Mrs. Chaffinch. I've never seen one in my garden before, so another first. I initially spied her in next door's tree, watching my garden, then she landed on my fence and posed for a photo, then she moved towards a feeder and posed again but decided against using the feeder and flew to the ground where she had a 5 minute meal in a shrub tub underneath the feeding station.

Cheers, Linda.

  • We regularly get a little flock of chaffies but I haven't notice them pairing up yet.  One little fat Mr sits on the fence while the others feed underneath the feeders.  I haven't worked out if he is the boss keeping an eye on the birds or whether he is the lookout and on the alert for danger.  Anyway they are lovely birds and great entertainment so I hope yours stays around and brings friends next time.

    There is something new to learn everyday...

    Hi Sparrow

    Lovely pictures of your Mrs Chaffinch.

    Never tire of these birds they are so successful in their own right

    Sorry about your loss Squirrel so heartbresking to hear about.

    I make sure that I put out lots of Black/Stripey Sunflower seeds which chaffies love so that is an attraction for them.

    Sparrow, thank you for sharing your super pictures {big smile}

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Lovely pictures. The chaffinch is practically one of the first birds of the morning chorus I hear . The Rooks are first and heard well before light then the blackbird starts with his constant chip chip but the chaffinch puffs his little chest and sings his heart out. We had a nest in the garden last year with four eggs in it but something got to them and we found it empty one morning. Such a beautiful creation. Do you know chaffinches collect cobwebs to line the nest with? There are the remains of scores in the hedgerows.
