Here are some pics that I think show the character of two birds that we see so often, They are not as colourful as finches and tit, but I think they make up for this in character.
He looks so grumpy!

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn...

I have tried re posting the pics so hopefully they show up now
House sparrows, tree sparrows, dunnocks, blackbirds - all much underrated. I like to watch them just as much as more glamorous stuff. Am I the only one who always says hello to blackbirds?
I would love to see a tree sparrow. Have not seen one since I was a child (and that's a long time ago)
Evening all!
I love my sparrows, I can watch them for ages and listen to their chatterings to each other. My small colony seems to have swelled to a higher number, not sure where the new ones have come from but not only are they are still in the Cottoneaster but are now lined up above it along the neighbours roof guttering.
Diogenes - you are not the only one, I also talk to my blackbirds, they always get a greeting of "hi little fella" or "hi little lady" when I go out to do the feeding. The robin gets a "hi ya little red" - sad or what! In fact any bird that appears when I am out there always gets a greeting. The only exception when I encountered a Grey Heron perched on my bird table roof a few years back. Not really awake I walked out and felt the woosh of his wings as he took off and then my greeting was somewhat more graphic.
Regards
Kerry

I don't say hello to Blackbirds, but i do say hello to a single Magpie i can't remember why,i must have heard it somewhere!
Littleowl
Littleowl. Superstition has it seeing one Magpie is unlucky (it was for the mouse in my lunchtime post) and if you say good morning to it then you will not get bad luck. I think turning around and spitting on the floor are also supposed to ward off bad luck. Don't you just love superstitions?
Good evening Kezmo
Like you I never get fed up with all the chatterings of my Sparrows. They are so cute. I am sure my colony has swollen in size too - from 12 to 20 birds.
Diogenes: I talk to all my birds, and I am sure they see it as a form of communication with them. The Sparrows appear at the top of their hedge at feeding time. They are always watching me 24/7. Birds can see into a humans mind, and they know how to read us somehow in their unique 'bird' way.
Maybe it is due to the colour of the bird if it is of interest of people. Blackbirds - black (M) /brown (F). House Sparrows - brown, Dunnocks- Grey brown, Robins are everywhere in our lives, and maybe over-estimated. Never the less they are part of the eco system and they are all lovable in their own unique ways.
Does colour really matter when we love our birds?

I do love a conversation about Sparrows! They are the most wonderful little birds and they live in these little communities that to me are just fascinating!
My Sparrow colony (over over 30 birds) has been playing me up lately and I've struggled to figure out what it is they want - that they haven't already got! The boycott of the new feeder ended when I moved it 3 feet closer to their conifer, 3 feet! lol!
I just love their chattering, sometimes from the house it is so loud its practically overwhelming and it can be heard quite a distance from the house too. I don't know about anyone else but when I go out on feeder duty the Sparrows are quick to start chattering excitedly and moving about in the trees.
I could go on for days, just love them!
Me too, Paul, but you already know that!
