For the past four years St Davids Gin have been producing and selling Ramsey Island and St Davids Seaweed gin using botanicals sourced on the island and the nearby Pembrokeshire mainland.
St Davids Gin officially launched on St David’s day in 2019, and they now have their own distillery in St. Davids. They produce two varieties, RSPB Ramsey Island gin and St Davids Seaweed gin. Using heather flowers and water mint harvested from the island and seaweed collected under licence from the mainland, these uniquely flavoured drinks have proved to be a big hit.
From the sale of their gin, St Davids Distillery have donated £20,000 to RSPB Cymru to be put towards our conservation work on Ramsey Island. Since receiving the fund RSPB Cymru have used the money to get a UV filter system for our drinking water which has meant an end to the sale of plastic bottles on the island as well as helping fund our core conservation work, from shepherding costs for the benefit of our important chough population through to tracking devices for our Manx shearwater research work.
A gin with an island flavour
Small quantities of heather flower and water mint are collected from Ramsey from areas which are earmarked for habitat management anyway. This management helps keep the islands important heathland in optimal condition. These botanicals are then used in the gin distilling process to add a unique island tone to your tipple.
We are delighted to announce that this offer is continuing with RSPB Cymru being selected as one of three charities the distillery will be donating to this year from the sale of their gin seeing 20% of each bottle sold will be donated back to RSPB Cymru. Click here to see what they’ve got to offer.
So why not treat yourself to a cheeky tipple this spring to enjoy watching the wildlife that visits your garden in the knowledge that part of the money you spend goes towards helping us carry out essential work on Ramsey Island.
