Really worried after a number of years of having large amounts of goldfinch in the garden, these last 6 months I've only seen one! Where have they gone? I still put out a nyger seed and change it and clean the feeder regularly, what can have happened to them?
I noticed the Golfinches disappeared for a few weeks, but returned when the sunflower hearts appeared - although they seem happier with them easily accessible in a wire mesh feeder with twig or stick perches pushed through at various levels, since they seem to prefer feeding in groups rather than singly.
Thanks for your suggestions I will give sunflower hearts a try.
I had never seen a goldfinch at my feeders until I put sunflower hearts in them.Now I can have half a dozen at the same time! Beautiful stunning birds.
We have a flock of them. They LOVE Sunflower Hearts. Fill feeder every day
Mine have a wide choice of whatever they heck they want but for sure the feed of choice for goldfinch has always been niger seeds.
I do put a mix of stuff and including niger seeds on the table part of the feeders but the goldfinches prefer to feed off the hanging feeders
