Had an op on my foot earlier this year so I haven't been able to do any work in the garden. It's a wilderness. Now I'm seeing birds I've never had in the garden before. Goldfinches and coal tits. OK, they're probably nothing much to most of you, but special for me. Maybe I should stop gardening altogether??

I have noticed, that the empty house, next to me,where the grass gets very long,before it is cut, gets a lot of birds,that never venture onto my neat lawn,with my supa-dupa bird station and umpteen feeders. Sounds like an easier and much cheaper way,to attract the birds. Would love to leave some of my lawn unkempt,but as I share my lawn with my next-door neighbour,it isn't really an option. Enjoy your goldfinches. I do get a lot of them, but never get sick of watching them. :-)
Why not have both? Lawns can be a mix of neat, short grass and longer flower rich patches, have a look at Adrian Thomas's blog Homes for Willdife post and forum thread on this! A mix of these two can look amazing and be great for wildlife!

THERE IS A BUSH IN THE GARDEN WHERE I WORK IT ATRACTS SO MANY BIRDS I HAVE HAD DUNOCK , BLACK CAP ,ROBIN. BLACKBIRDS AND HYBRED DOVE/WOODPIGEON NEWEST VISTOR IS GOLDFINCH JUST WISH THE TREE WAS IN MY GARDEN IT WAS EATING THE DEAD HEADS OF BLUEBELLS
Bet you do! I already had robins, dunnocks, wood pigeons etc in my garden. Always delightful to see new visitors though.
