I know the Herons eat fish and supposedly small birds and rodents, but this morning,I walked around the corner at it had killed a full grown blackbird! I have never seen one do this before,it was trying to swallow it,but because it saw me,left the bird on the floor and flew off!
I photographed a Heron kill and try to swallow a full grown Little Grebe.
They seem to have a go at pretty much anything that comes within striking range.
Andrew
I saw one yesterday flying over the M54 - it was quite low and very distracting when you are driving! I don't know what it was carrying, but it didn't look like a fish - more like a small mammal, but could have been another bird. I didn't realise they ate anything other than fish!
They eat there share of birds, really efficient killers.
What surprised me about the Heron was that our pond is so well netted thought it impossible he could get any fish but when looking out of window he literally landed on the one piece close to pond he could land on and just dropped out of sky onto a sixpence.
He came back this afternoon, saw me and was screeching like a Pterodactyl!Never heard one screech like that before!Oh,dear,Guess he was miffed!
They make that noise quite a lot Melissa.
