This is really aimed at the song thrush and yes, even the blue tits that were around minutes before and after the allotted hour...
I had a song thrush turn up the day ofter the event! Also a greater spotted woodepecker. Typical!
On Sunday though it seemed as though the blackbirds were on a mission to thwart my garden birdwatch! I have five and every time I had a group of birds on the lawn they kept swooping in as though they were practising to be sparrowhawks! It's a wonder they get anything to eat themselves, they were too busy making sure none of the other birds got anything (slight exageration there but you know what I mean!)

Yep, I concur. Still at least our local sparrowhawk didn't put in an appearance...
I've always wondered about this contradiction: one minute, as you say, they are fighting almost to the death over a scrap. The next they are warning each other of the approach of a predator...
