When I started my watch I saw a bird that I didn't know, but it was a fleeting glimpse. It had a red line on the top of it's head. Luckily it came back and this time brought a male companion and decided to sit in the top of the Hawthorne bush quietly. I went through my garden bird book looking for it, as one had a very clear red head. And there they were: 2 redpolls, 1 male, 1 female, sitting with goldfinches.
Hi Rich, lesser redpolls have been turning up in many gardens from what I have read so far on the forum posts, great birds to have around and they have a particular fondness for nyger seed.

Redpolls are regularly feeding from the nyger seed in my garden - have counted 7 at once but not on the bird watch weekend. We had 4 today, a family I think.
