Well this was something that i wasnt expecting in Bedfordshire. Never seen one before so we were very excited.
Lots of Magpies and Wood pigeon and a few little garden birds, so not a bad day really.
They are very striking, aren't they? Earlier this year there were three visiting my garden: male, female and juvenile. I only see the female now.
I have 2 definite regular visitors, I never thought I'd ever see a great spotted woodpecker on my bird feeder, fantastic sight to see isn't it?? Last year the parents brought their offspring into the garden 2, all 3 birds were a glorious sight !!

A GSW has visited our Hampshire garden for the last two years. In 30 years it is the first we have seen here but only a single male.
About 25 years ago we did have one sighting of Green Woodpecker eating ants on the lawn.
They are beautiful aren't they? I used to have one visiting all the time but haven't seen him for a long time now - rackon he must be dead. Hopefully another one will find my feeders.
I'd never seen a Woodpecker before moving to Surrey 10 years ago, have since seen both verieties. I heard what I thought was one first then saw him up the tree tapping away. Now he's a reg feeder on the nut feeder along with a pair of Nuthatches which are also beautiful if not my fave bird at moment.
