I have a very long garden (250 ft), so opted to watch the feeding area, as each year. Only 1 sparrow, no wood pigeon, 4 starlings (yet yesterday there was over a dozen fighting over the fat), no thrush (though resident in the garden), no woodpecker, no jay .......
Looking out of the kitchen window while cooking lunch, the buddleia was full of sparrows, a goldfinch turned up and the fat was smothered in flapping starlings! Either they know it is the BGBW weekend, or there are too many insects in the bushes for them to bother about my premium seed and peanuts.
Nah, I think they just know and enjoy having a laugh! No bullfinch either then (Dompfaff)? ;)
I have not had any sparrow for years around here just the one or two a year.
