Im a new member today! and getting involved with the ' Big garden Bird Watch' ...and my first hour of watching a Grey Heron decided to land in the river opposite my cottage ..wow!!..fortunately we do see them every year but its rare to see two together.
welcome to the rspb it is getting close to the breeding season and people will start two see pairs ( 2 grey herons) if you can put food out for them
OH thank you .. the river i think, maybe filling up with fish then?..hopefully that will be enough to entice them. I have also seen this morning ..3 red breasted merganser and many dippers.......not bad for my first hour on watch? :)
sounds like a nice place to live
A heron flew past me the other day and screached really harshly. Scared the @@@@ out of me. I could suddenly see the pterodactyl relations in them. They look so majestic..... I'm not sure what sound I expected them to emit. They always seem to be silent.
I've never heard one?....sounds unreal! i can relate to what you said there when they fly, i watch them approach the river, then they tend to stay static and ive been told they are very shy ?... When i watch them i have a habit of doing the same thing ....i dont move :)!! .......it is a wonderful place to live, thankyou .. last xmas from our bedroom window, we saw an otter playing in the snow :)
I found a recording on the following RSPB page.
www.rspb.org.uk/.../index.aspx
when I heard it it was about 10/15m away.. and very grating
Otters playing in the snow! wow
Thank you Tom , thinking about it now, i have actually heard that sound, when i'm in my garden and have'nt related it to anything...it is an amazing sound..quite unique !
