Do we count all the birds we see in an hour? Or is it how many birds are in the garden at any one time? If so, why are we asked to watch for an hour? I'm confused.

Hi what you need is to count the maximum number of all the types of bird you see at any time eg if 1 goldfinch its one but if later in the hour you see two then it two not three so the mximum record at any one time any help??????
Im going to have fun tomorrow counting some 20-30 sparrows tried it this morning was going great then the mob of starlings raided my suet pellets didnt know where to start or finish for that matter lol.
