i have a new bird coming to the garden lots of very bright yellow with some grey a bit bigger than the chaffinch does not look like goldfinch in my bird book as this bird is and has much more and brighter yellow any ideas ? im trying to catch it in a photo but doing it through the window is very blurred.
hi deedee, could it be a greenfinch? although called "green" finch i find the yellow bars on their wings are usually most conspicuos.
regards,
mark
hi, thanks. yeah, true, i've just thought that too. that'd be a great garden visitor!
Thankyou for your help i tried yesterday to take a photo but its very skittish got the zoom lens ready for it coming back it doesnt look like the green finch colours either will keep trying as its so vivid and different, i have over a dozen regular chaffinch (got photo) one robin very bossy chases everything near it (photo) one magpie, one wren too brown to catch it flitting in and out the bushes, one pidgeon, dozens of mad fighting over the food starlings, only ever a few sparrows, a few bullfinch recently appeard dark heads very redish pink front, a few blackbirds, one squirrel pinching the birdfood and one hedgehog eating what the birds drop onto the ground.
Had another look at the book showing green finch its similar in colour but the yellow on the bird here is way more its almost more yellow than anything so distinctive nearly fell of the couch getting the camera .
wow, really sounds more like a grey wagtail then! good luck with the photos
Sorry i was too amazed by the colour to notice it behaviour at the time but the tail was longer than the chaffinch and looked nothing like the blue or great tits they are smaller get a lot of them in the garden, i live in a small town surrounded by farmland maybe its come from there ? got camera, bird binoculars will post if i catch it thanks again.
No the tail was not as long and the bird was not as slim, not sure if thats the right word it was much more yellow .
the male is much more yellow than that.

Not a siskin the closest i can see to it would be golden oriole it was that bright yellow with the lesser amount of dark colour , this week is the first time ive ever seen it i hope it comes back.
We occasionally get reports of escapee village or masked weavers or similar species turning up with sparrows, this could be a possibility. The link here shows an escapee weaver nest building in Portland in 2010!
