I usually do my Big Garden Birdwatch on Sunday, but this year, I chose to do the same hour on both days. On the Saturday, most of my daily visitors came (excluding my robin and the coal tits), plus less frequently spotted goldfinches, wrens, reed buntings and long tailed tits. I was just about to finish my one hour vigil at the kitchen window when the kestrel landed on the garden fence and fixed a beady eye on the bird table.
I repeated the exercise on Sunday and recorded fewer birds, so submitted the Saturday results. I reckon that the birds had been too well fed on the first day with the gourmet food I had provided. Needless to say, the black cap which I had seen earlier in the week, did not put in appearance, but has visited since.
