Hello. I'm new to the forum and a complete amateur to the bird's but I am learning. Therefore I need some expert help. This bird came into my garden in the new year. The attached picture isn't very clear because it was taken in a hurry because i was scared it would fly away before i got chance. It was about a foot tall as it sat, had a striped tail and an owl like face. Can anyone help me to identify what it is please?

From your description and the pic, I'd say it was a sparrowhawk.

Definately looks like a sparrowhawk to me too.shaz
