Will be interesting to see your photos, Pisky. Serins are very scarce visitors to the UK and most that do turn up tend to be in the south. However, nothing's impossible.

I agree. From what I can make out the head markings are not right for a Serin. Never mind, Pisky, it's still a nice bird to have in the garden.
Thanks! At least hubby and I can stop arguing now! And I see it has red status so I'm well pleased it has graced our garden!
Serins are green-toned on the body rather than brown. They are also very small, with little-bird proportions (ie the head looks proportionately big, the body small), while Yellowhammer looks large-bodied and long-tailed.
Yellowhammer is a great garden bird! It's on the red list of birds of conservation concern because it has declined so much recently, anyone who has Yellowhammers coming to feed in their garden is doing a lot to help this struggling species.
