A picturesque corner of Suffolk.

The great thing about living in Felixstowe is that I am very close to the southern edge of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB - Felixstowe Ferry is actually within it.  When I took my camera out yesterday I tried to sneak in some scenic snaps among the usual birdy ones.  I couldn't leave out the birds entirely, though:

A stunning herring gull in flight

Looking bemused and slightly fluffy!

Not sure whether these are dunlin, turnstones or something else entirely.

I'm pretty sure these are ringed plovers, though.

'Grub up, lads!'

One of the Ferry's friendliest fishermen heads out.  Lovely technique with those oars!

These two were persevering magnificently against an incoming tide.

A determined spadger.

A big slice of local history - this is Bawdsey Manor.

Two of our Martello towers.  Felixstowe has at least four of them.

A cormorant flies across the breaking wave.

I have a huge soft spot for this sort of boat!

What a beautiful sight.

I hope you've all enjoyed this selection.

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • A great selection of pics, Clare. It's lovely to see the scenery around other areas. I've never been to that area even though my grandmother was from Norfolk.

    Kind regards

  • I agree with Jenny, a lovely set of shots Clare. In my opinion I think your waders are Dunlin (look out for orange legs in Turnstone).

  • Lovely pics. My Mum's side of the family live(d) in Brantham, Bentley, Wherstead, Tattingstone and other places in that area, so I used to go there a lot in my childhood. I have to ask the question now, because I never knew at the time, what is the structure way out in the distance in the Cormorant photo? The giant 'arch'. What is it?

    I'm pretty sure it's Sealand.

The Brantham area is lovely as well - Flatford is very close to it, as is Manningtree.

  • That's it. Rough's Tower. Thanks. I've waited a long time to get that piece of information.

  • I think it's utterly cool to have had someone declare a principality off our coast!

  • Lovely pics, Clare. I love sailing craft, too - often very elegant!

  • Goodness me Clare, as well as all your lovely pics you then throw in all that info about Sealand!!  Will have to have a proper read tomorrow, so many interesting, albeit quirky, facts to absorb!

  • Great thread Clare, lovely photo selection and history too, all very interesting and makes me realise I have much to catch up on having lived in Suffolk for almost 4 years back in the early '90s !    The lovely sailing vessel is so beautiful, so elegant on the water.
