Tell us!?! ..... What is your favourite seabird?

Seabirds are birds that have adapted to life within the marine environment .In general, seabirds live longer and breed later they invest a great deal of time in their young. Most species nest in colonies, which can vary in size from a few dozen birds to millions.

    Hi there

    I have chosen the Shearwater, due to the fact I was lucky to see the in Menorca on my holiday a couple of years ago. and that was an experience in a million.  So close, and yet so far above my head on a walkabout.

    Hope to see them once more this year {you never know..but this time my camera will be there for the occasion}

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • So our winner is Albatross with 25% of the vote. Hardly a surprise if we think what excellent and graceful birds they are. Don’t forget our Save The Albatross appeal. Thanks go to everyone who voted.

  • Poor Kittiwakes!!! Why did nobody vote for them? So charismatic, and have an awesome call, their chicks are incredibly cute, and the adults are so beautiful as well! I'm not a massive fan of gulls, as they can be such bullies, but Kittiwakes are just so gentle and nice. And they are declining so badly in past years as well. Why is there not a 'Save the Kittiwake' campaign? :(

    (although saying that, my fave seabirds are Razorbills, Eiders and Sandwich Terns, in that order)

  • Also, how has no one voted for petrels? Storm Petrels are awesome, so tiny and they still mange to survive living their whole lives at sea, its so amazing! And they smell really nice too (which is weird i know, but still true)

    Great Black-backed Gulls are good in their own way, but can be bullies, and its sad to see them take so many eggs and chicks of other seabird species, but they do have their own charm.

    I wish I'd seen this thread sooner, and cousl have voted for my favourties! Oh well...
