MYSTERY TREE QUIZ #12

Once again, it’s time for MrsT’s quizzes to branch out and spread their roots, and this round... you’ve guessed it, its trees! They help regulate our climate and provide food and shelter for a whole host of animals as well as providing us with a variety of resources, we might otherwise take for granted. Let’s face it, what wood (pun intended) the world be without trees? They come in all shapes and sizes, as do the leaves and fruit that they bare and yes, I was one of those kids who loved the school trip to Westonbirt Arboretum. For the next 12 weeks, I will leaf you with a clue or two about trees for you to mulch over.

Enjoy

  • Congratulations to all of you who guessed Silver birch (Betula pendula). Let’s start with the clues! First clue: A shiny place for a choppy broiler. Silver is shiny metal and choppy broiler an anagram of Birch polypore (Razor strop), a fungus often associated with Silver birch trees. The second clue: Folk of Colne may have cottoned on to this. Colne, as many of you will know is in Lancashire. Silver birch timber once made the spools, bobbins and reels used in the Lancashire cotton industry, hence cottoned on.

Silver birch can reach up to 30 metres in height. Its bark sheds paper-like layers leaving the base black and rugged. As Silver birch trees mature dark diamond shaped fissures form on the bark. The deep roots of Silver birch trees can help soil quality and help other plants grow. Their leaves are small and ovate in shape with jagged edges. Silver birch trees provide homes for a whole host of insects as well as food and potential nest sites for many birds.

A picture of a Silver birch tree is found here.

Did you know that: Silver birch was a symbol of renewal and purification in Celtic mythology.
