RSPB Communities Christmas Advent calendar

Welcome to the RSPB Communities Christmas Advent calendar! Rather than chocolates (sorry), with each day that leads up to the big day, why not open a virtual Advent calendar window and reveal a teaser for you to ponder or post a picture. There is no right or wrong answer, the answers will simply be what you want to appear in that window. It’s Christmas, so let’s have some fun!

Claire

  • I shall have to ask one of our lads (ravens) to do a Christmas flyover for you Clare :)

  • I've seen a couple of your lads at The Lodge - I just want them to keep up the good work of spreading eastwards!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • There are so many birds that I'd like to see but after hearing them in the stones at Mousa Broch in Shetland many years ago I would have to pick the Storm Petrel. For such a small bird to spend most of it's life on the open ocean just boggles the mind. From what I understand they only come ashore to nest and even then they arrive and leave when it's dark.

  • It's gotta be a Lammergeier Vulture! Nothing says "wild" to me more than one of these soaring over a desolate landscape! Currently planning a trip to Spain to see them next year!

    Hi,

We were lucky enough to see one of these on a trip to the French pyrenées in 2008. In the last week a dying bird was found by a railway line near Saint-Jean pied de Port (reported by a driver) with it's body full of lead shot. Sadly it didn't survive. What I would like to do to the hunter is not suitabe for printing on this forum.

I really hope you see one. We went back this year & saw 3 species of vulture but not this one.

    Best wishes

    Hazel in Southwest France

  • Thanks for that Hazel, a real shame and sad story and I totally agree with you regarding the hunter.

I have found a place not far from Barcelona where Vultures are fed in the winter, looks like I could be saving up for that!

quite a lot of us would be with you there Noisette, our club recording area is pretty much surrounded by grouse moors and some of these are "black holes" for wandering raptors even out of the game shooting season

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • At the moment, a King Vulture.

    "Let loose the Kraken!"

  • A good view of a Golden Eagle wouldn't go amiss.

  • A golden eagle is also my choice though I wouldn't mind a white tailed eagle either.
